We left Carrabelle late morning on Wednesday on our way to Independence RV for our estimate appointment on Friday. No knowing or if the front panel would move while driving, I wanted to make short hops each day. Surprisingly, all went well and there was no movement or strange noises, the gorilla tape held up just fine.
Leaving Carrabelle, we drove 144 miles to Chiefland and stopped at Southern Leisure RV Resort, a Sun Resort, for the first night. Normally we don’t review campgrounds if we are only staying a night or two. But Southern Leisure is a really nice place, well maintained, and the staff and seasonal residents are very friendly. We would stay here again, for a longer stay if we were ever back in the area.
Leaving Chiefland, we drove 114 miles to Winter Garden and stopped at Encore Winter Garden, a Thousand Trails Park. Their website says “The beauty and serenity of towering pines await you at Winter Garden RV Resort. Located a few miles from Disney World, this RV resort in Florida is the premier destination for campers seeking a wide variety of activities.” Talk about false advertising, this place is a dump, overgrown, with a lot of old campers that clearly have been parked for quite some time. Not to mention we arrived at check in time to find the office closed, and the roads are very narrow for anything bigger than a pop-up camper.
Being only three miles from Independence RV, we were out of there at 8:30 am, which is the earliest we’ve ever left a campground.
After about 45 minutes, we had our estimate for the repair in hand and the work schedule for when we return to Florida. Our service advisor told us it was safe to drive as long as we kept monitoring the gorilla tape holding the panel together, so with that good news we were on our way to the next stop at Travelers Campground in Alachua.
The construction on the Florida Turnpike slowed us down in spots, and I75 was stop and go for the first 50+ miles, but after that it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.
After being escorted to our site and setting up it was time to relax for a couple of days. Travelers Campground is a really nice place with level asphalt sites, great water pressure, and a nice shade tree to keep us cool. They even have an area for rescued animals. It was really neat watching the donkeys, horses and emus. And it’s nice to be in an area that has a variety of restaurants.
Tomorrow we’ll continue north and west to Chattahoochee until Tuesday when we continue west to Defuniak Springs for the remainder of the week and back on track with our original travel plans.
