We boarded the bus for today’s excursion and headed to the historical Kilohana Plantation, which was established in 1864 and managed by Gaylord Wilcox, Kauai’s famous sugar baron.
Upon arriving at the plantation, we boarded the Kauai Plantation Railway and embarked on a 40-minute fun and informative conductor narrated train ride through the 105 acre plantation, full of fruit-tree orchards, sugar cane, pineapple, banana, papaya, and numerous other exotic fruit and indigenous trees. We even stopped for a few minutes to feed the herd of pigs, goats and the donkey!
We then we given an hour or so to browse the sugar estate mansion, built in 1935, and since been converted to small craft shops. They also had a coffee bar and served the best Kona coffee I’ve ever tasted.
Our next stop was Opaekaa Falls, an 80 foot tiered waterfall. Opaekaa means “rolling shrimp”. The waterfall was named after the delicious crustaceans that were once abundant in its streams and pools.

It was a great excursion. The scenery was spectacular and the weather was a perfect 75 degrees. Tomorrow we move on to Lahaina, Maui for some whale watching (hopefully)
