Selma Alabama

After visiting Montgomery’s historical sites last weekend, we wanted to drive over to Selma to see the infamous Edmund Pettus Bridge. If you need a history lesson about what happened in Selma, Google it, some amazing (and scary) things happened in this area of Alabama. The National Park Service has a very good interpretive center across the intersection at the foot of the bridge. If you’re ever in the area, make sure you check it out.

What surprised me the most from our visit to Selma is how small the city is. The population is only a little over 20,000, according to the 2010 census. Also, from driving around, it is clear, even today, that there’s two different classes of people, one side of town has large Victorian homes with well-manicured lawns, and then you cross over the train tracks and it looks like a shanty town with old rusted cars parked on the front lawns. Sad how some things never change.
