Weather: Sunny, high 70s
We finally made it over to St. George Island!! It was sunny today, no fog, so driving over the four-mile bridge over the Apalachicola Bay was not an issue.
St. George Island is a barrier island roughly 28 miles long and a mile wide at its widest point. It is divided into three “sections”. The most eastern portion is the St. George Island State Park. The middle portion is restaurants, bars, small businesses, homes and the public beaches. The western portion is a private, gated, highly exclusive housing community with its own airstrip that includes some of the most expensive multimillion-dollar beach homes along the Gulf of Mexico. Needless to say, no one gave us the code to open the gate. (How rude)
The beaches looked nice and were very wide with pure white sand and grass on the tops of the dunes near the homes. The state park was really nice and had beach access with public buildings, as well as a campground with water and 30/50 electric. There’s no sewer, but they do have a dump site.
It was a nice place to finally visit, and on the way back we stopped at The Fishermen’s Wife for lunch.
Debbie had a salad with shrimp, scallops and an unknown variety of fish. I had a fried shrimp basket with hush puppies, fries, cheese grits, and coleslaw. The food was really good, and we may go back before we leave.
Tomorrow’s forecast is for rain showers most of the day, so we plan on being lazy and just hang out and watch tv.
