Yea, I know, we still have four years to go. Some may say it’s a little too soon to begin the purging. But as I walk around the house and the garage, I look at what we’ve accumulated over the years and wonder why we needed all of this “stuff” in the first place. I know I (we) must have had a good reason at some point in time, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was.
Today’s project is to tackle the office closet, which is roughly 4′ x 8′. I know it’s not much, but I figure we need to do a little at a time so that we don’t become overwhelmed and under pressure when we get closer to becoming full-timers.
I have no idea what’s in there, it’s been about ten years since I saw the back of the closet and for the past few years the only open space has been an 18″ square inside the door. The closet was used for office supplies when I had my own business. Again, I know there was a good reason I bought most of the stuff, but did the business really need two binding machines with all of the ancillary supplies? The business didn’t have that many employees!
Well I’m happy to say that after several hours today’s mission was accomplished. Three contractor’s bags was filled with garbage, and several items were put on the pile for the garage sale we plan on having in September.
I’t feels good to be finally starting the “purge”. If you’re looking for an “almost” new binding machine, let me know. I’ll give you a good deal.
It’s never too early to start! And now you’ll also start thinking twice before you buy anything!
We have 2 1/2 years before we go full time and we’ve started the purge as well. All shopping expeditions start with phrase “what will we do with this in 2 years” 😂
Exactly what Debbie said! We didn’t start purging until March of this year (sold our house just 3 days ago (!)) and it was a huge job. Sometimes I wish we had had more time to do it slower, but also know that having such an immediate deadline kept me from hemming and hawing over everything. Also, having the leisurely pace you have, you’ll be much more thoughtful with what you *do* purchase over the next four years – wondering if it’ll also work with you and your new lives on wheels!

Congrats on the sale of your house Alexandria! I would much prefer getting on the road in less than four years, but realistically that won’t happen unless we win the lottery, LOL. Our first garage sale will be some time next month. Our plan is to use the proceeds to pay for some of the home projects that are planned so the house is ready when it goes on the market.

The purge never really ends. I started a good two years ahead and, four years into my full-time RVing, I was still taking stuff to Goodwill, etc. Good luck!
Oh Susan, I was hoping it does end, LOL. We had a storage unit for almost ten years and finally cleared it out a few months ago. I don’t think the total value of what was in the locker came close to what we spent in the monthly charges over the years. Needless to say almost all of the items went on the garage sale pile. 🙂
